Colcom Foundation is an organization that works to make educational opportunities accessible to those who need them most. The organization was founded by Cordelia Scaife May in the 1990s. After Cordelia passed away from cancer (1997), Colcom recognized the need for adult mentors and volunteers to continue the foundation’s work and began promoting itself more actively through college chapters nationwide. Starting with just five schools in Pennsylvania, Colcom has grown to include over 800 schools across the United States.
They support education through the Allegheny Front, a public media program that covers environmental problems in western Pennsylvania.
Colcom believes that education is the key to improving a community and that “every child should have the opportunity to attend a school that will enable them to fulfill their potential.” They accomplish this by funding projects and supplies at underserved schools and educational programs, holding community meetings with local schools, sponsoring school events, and working with local teachers. Colcom Foundation focuses on helping communities improve their quality of life by extending education opportunities. It is one way that Colcom helps schools provide a better learning environment.
