Richard established the e-commerce investment. Richard Liu Qiangdong has been the organization’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer since its launch in 2004. Liu is a native of Chang’an, a small community outdoors in the city of Suqian in the Jiangsu province of China. The village was not well developed as it lacked amenities, including electricity and water.

Even though Richard Liu came from a less fortunate family, he was ambitious. He always dreamt of being a village head to help those less disadvantaged in the community. Liu Qiangdong was a good leader; he always led his classmates to various occasions and events. During school holidays, Liu would visit the nearest town to see various developments.
Through the help of his village people, he joined the University in the city. At the University, Richard launched his first business of selling CD ROMS. The business expanded, and he was able to change the life of his family back in the village. An online business was born when the country was affected by SARS in 2013.
